Richard studied music at the University of East Anglia, majoring in composition and music history, before going on the University of Leeds where he studied for a PhD. in the area of music and philosophy. For many years he has been active as a community musician, playing the piano, percussion, flute and of course singing. He joined Hepton Singers in 2006 as a bass, and was appointed musical director at the end of 2018. His musical tastes are wide-ranging, from Hildegard of Bingen from the twelfth century, to living composers such as Arvo Pärt.
