SATURDAY 18 MAY 4PM HEPTONSTALL CHURCH £9/£6/£1 (18 & under)
This year’s Hepton Singers May concert will mark 50 years since the Choir’s first public performance in the Spring of 1974. The choir will be performing a diverse range of music with with a “watery theme” running through all the pieces. These will include music by the Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, whose compositions embody some of the deepest and most powerful primal undercurrents of nature, through to the ethereal sounds of Vaughan Williams’ settings of texts by Shakespeare. The choir will also be performing several folk song arrangements, from Alison West’s highly dramatic Outlandish Knight through to Bengt Ollén’s hauntingly beautiful setting of the Swedish folk song Trilo. Also included are works by two American composers: Eric Whitacre’s sumptuous Water Night, and Samuel Barber’s yearningly beautiful To Be Sung on the Water. Last but by no means least, in keeping with the choir’s long tradition of singing music from the Late Renaissance alongside contemporary works, the concert will include music by Orlando di Lasso as well as several works written especially for Hepton Singers by people closely associated with the choir.
